What we aim for

We build this site to target WCAG 2.1 Level AA. That is the accessibility standard most guidance and most law points at.

Aiming at a standard is not the same as meeting it on every page. We do not claim this site fully meets it, and parts of it may fall short. Where you find a problem, we want to hear about it.

What is built in

Every page tells your browser what language it is written in, so a screen reader reads it in the right voice.

Pages that have a main content area start with a "Skip to content" link, so you can jump straight past the menu instead of walking through it on every page.

The menu button on small screens says whether the menu is open or shut.

Every form field has a label attached to it, groups of choices are named as a group, and the result of sending a form is announced rather than only shown.

The tools this site is built with require a text description on every image, and flag any picture that is missing one before the page goes out.

Anything that moves is written to switch itself off when your device is set to reduce motion.

You can zoom in. Nothing here blocks it.

Where this site may fall short

Some of what makes a page usable is a judgement call rather than a setting: whether a picture's description really describes it, whether a heading says what the section is about, whether a colour is doing work on its own. We do our best on those.

Files you can download from this site, such as PDFs, were not always made here and may not be readable by a screen reader. Ask us and we will send you what is in them another way.
